It’s easy to move your files and settings from another Mac or PC to your MacBook Air. You can transfer information to your MacBook Air from an old computer—or from a Time Machine backup on a USB storage device—either wirelessly, or with an Ethernet cable and adapters.

You will probably get this message if you have the legacy edition of the game and try to run a save that was saved with the standard version. The two versions are now several patches apart and you can’t run such a save game on the legacy edition.

Problem

  • I get the the following error message when trying to load a save game: The saved game you are attempting to load was saved with a newer version of The Sims 4 than is currently installed. Please update in order to safely load this saved game.
  • I get the following error message when I trying to save a game.
    ‘The game failed to save. Error Code: 0.
  • In Build mode I can build exactly one thing at the time.

Cause

Seems to be a conflict/corruption with the current save games

Solution

If you just have save error 0 you can try if you can save by using save as and save to a new name. If you have have three issues, follow instructions below:

  1. Close the game
  2. Go to Documents/Electronic Arts/The Sims 4/cache
  3. Delete all the cache files.
  4. Move your saves folder to your desktop
  5. Start the game to create a new saves folder
  6. Your game should now be back in working order but your existing save games are also gone.
  7. Try to put each save game from the folder on your desktop into the new one (one at the time) and see if any of them still work. The one with the name slot001 is the auto save and is most probably the culprit since they tend to corrupt when the game crashes.
  8. The game keeps the last few saves you make. Here’s instructions how to recover them: How do I restore a backup ?
  9. If not, I’m afraid that you will need to start over.

How to prevent

This issue is most often caused by a corrupt auto-save (slot_00000001). Because of this, I recommend to not rely on it. First thing you do after starting a new game is save it under a new name so it’s saved to another slot. Save on a regular basis. Use save as and not save to have multiple saves you can go back to.

Also backup your saves folder after every play session to an external drive or just a different space on your hard drive.

  1. On your PC, download and install the appropriate Windows Migration Assistant, based on the version of macOS on your Mac:
    • Windows Migration Assistant for macOS Big Sur

After you move your data

When migration completes, close Windows Migration Assistant on your PC. Then log in to the new user account on your Mac. The first time you log in to a user account migrated from your PC, you’re asked to set a password. You can use the same password that you used on your PC, or create a new password.

After logging in to the user account that you migrated, authorize your computer for iTunes Store purchases. It’s important to authorize before you sync or play content downloaded from the iTunes Store.

If you have issues moving your data

  • Quit all open apps on your PC, then try migrating your content again. For example, you can press Alt-Tab to choose an open application, then press Alt-F4 to quit it.
  • If your PC doesn't appear in the Setup Assistant or Migration Assistant window on your Mac, make sure the computers are connected to the same network. You can create a network by connecting a single Ethernet cable between your Mac and PC. If that doesn't help, check for firewall software on your PC and turn it off. After migration completes, you can turn firewall software on again.
  • If Migration Assistant doesn’t open on your PC, turn off any antivirus software on your PC. Then try to open Migration Assistant again. After migration completes. You can turn that software on again.
  • If you still can't migrate your information successfully, you can use an external drive or file sharing to manually copy important data to your Mac.
