You can enter BIOS.There is a setting in there that will turn off the 'Fn' setting of the 'F' keys and will make them work straight as 'F' keys and not their perspective Fn setting. You'll then have to press Fn+F key to get them to do the function settings. Click on the checkbox next to Use all F1, F2, etc, keys as standard function keys. The Function buttons will now work as you want. To use the special features instead of F1 etc. Then just press the fn key at the same time as the F key as before, except the function is now reversed.

Note: If you're using a Mac and are having trouble with the function keys, you may need to set your F keys to function as function keys. You can do this by going to System Preferences > Keyboard, going to the Keyboard area, and checking the 'Use all F1, F2, etc' box.
